It is a protected area, located in the south west of Riyadh Province (19º30’ N – 45º30’ E).  The reserve is generally a sandy desert and is home to several reintroduced species such as Gazelles, Oryx, Ostrich, etc. Vegetation is generally along the periphery of the reserve and in a few areas where silt accumulate and maintain a substratum for ephemerals to grow. Dunes are dominated by sand dune perennials such as Centropodia forsskalii, C. fragilis, Stripagrostis spp., Moltkiopsis ciliata, Dipterygium glaucum. Eremobium aegyptiacum, etc. Wadis and rocky hillocks support the growth of trees species such as Maerua crassifolia, Ziziphus spina-christi or Capparis sinaica,, Aerva javanica, Blepharis ciliaris, etc. respectively.
